If you want to sneak attack with weapons, then I wouldn't take any levels of Arcane Trickster. Since they're mostly touch attacks the poor BAB from AT doesn't matter as much. If I were the GM, I would allow this, bug every substitution would carry a mandatory +5 to the DC at a minimum.I think Arcane Trickster from Eldritch Scoundrel is better if you want to focus on Sneak Attack using spells. Like, you know what questions to ask a suspect, you just aren't good at the delivery, the performance of the interrogation, so it's harder for you to get the information you want. Now, the thing is, it's entirely reasonable to have the Profession skill used as a substitute for the above, but maybe the DC is higher, of there is a limit on how effective it is.

A good detective will have a wide variety of knowledge skills to pull from, also a maxed out Perception skill, a fair amount of Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, and Sense Motive as well as these are all necessary to read a suspect, convince them to confess, or to build a network of contacts for you to visit for tips, leads, or insight into topics you are unfamiliar with. You know everything about what it takes to be a detective and do a detectors job, but that doesn't mean you have all of the skills of a detective. It likely encompasses everything that Profession (police officer) does, and would be considered it's parent skill. booking a suspect, arrests, submitting evidence, filing for warrants, scheduling court appearances etc. It involves knowing all of the paperwork involved with working at a police station, i.e. It involves knowing the police procedures needed to lock down a crime scene and canvas the area.
